FED:Gays have no right to marriage: churches=2
The group argues marriage promotes and protects the identity of children and their
internationally recognised right to know, have access to and be nurtured by both their
mother and father.
It says the legal recognition of marriage is needed to ensure a child's relationship
to the family unit and to both their mother and a father.
"Children have a right to the complementary experiences of mothering and fathering
as far as possible," the group said in a statement.
Mr Palmer rejects the view, backed by opinion polls, that most Australians support gay marriage.
He took aim at the mainstream media, saying it was not allowing a fair debate on the issue.
"If we had a full public debate, where every side had the opportunity to argue their
case, I think we would be like California.
"They had same-sex marriage legislated for, (but) when that went to a referendum the
people rejected it."

FED:Henson photos likened to child porn
Photographer BILL HENSON'S controversial images of under-age girls have been likened
to child pornography at a Senate hearing.
Campaigners against the sexual exploitation of children want content ratings applied to art.
They've given evidence today to a Senate legal affairs committee .. charged with investigating
Australia's film and literature classification codes.
MELINDA TANKARD REIST .. a co-founder of Collective Shout .. has cited a HENSON image
of a naked under-age girl .. saying if the image was shown in any other place it would
be considered illegal and somebody could probably be charged.
Ms REIST has called on the classification board to act .. alleging that paedophiles
have bought HENSON'S images for their collections.

SOC:Muscat to miss Perth match
WELLINGTON, Aug 30 NZPA - The Wellington Phoenix will be without key defender Manny
Muscat for this Sunday's round five A-League soccer match against Perth.
The right back, one of the Phoenix's most consistent performers during the past two
seasons, has been called into the Maltese squad for international matches against Israel
on Thursday and Latvia next Tuesday.
Troy Hearfield is expected to take Muscat's place for the match in Perth.
Goalkeeper Mark Paston is also doubtful to make the trip. Paston has been struggling
with a groin strain and had trouble kicking during last Friday's 1-0 loss to Brisbane.
Recently acquired goalkeeper Danny Vukovic is next in line to don the gloves.
Meanwhile, Socceroos defender Jade North is with the Australian national team in Europe
for friendlies against Switzerland on Friday and Poland next Tuesday but a Phoenix spokesman
said the defender could arrive in Wellington in time for the match against Sydney FC on

Pratt's daughter Heloise Waislitz read from a letter she said her father would never
get to read, saying of all the "wonderful childhood memories she cherished", one was sight,
the other sound.
"At your 70th birthday I told you about my abiding visual memory. I said that when
I was 10 I thought you looked like Rock Hudson," Ms Waislitz said, prompting laughter
from mourners.
"I know that sounds corny but it's true - I remembered how you came into the room ready
to go out, wearing your dinner suit, black tie and all. It may be more than 35 years ago,
dad, but to me you really did look like a film star and I was starstruck - I guess I still
am.
"The other great memory is even stronger: it's the sound of you and me singing together.
That also began when I was about 10 years old, singing together at parties, at countless
Visy events and at family celebrations.
"Since then, hundreds of times singing together."
Ms Waislitz said her father had also taught her how to carry on when times got tough
and added, as chairman of the Pratt Foundation, she hoped she could carry his qualities
forward.
"What a wonderful legacy you've created," she said.
"It's reflected in the millions of lives you have touched, and ... as a man who loved
his fellow Australians, who was proud of being Jewish, who cared about humanity, who gave
generously and who taught me and my family how to give with joy and purpose.
"This letter from me to you is from daughter to father, just to say thank you for being
the most caring wonderful father who always wanted the best for his children and who encouraged
and drew the best out of all of us and for being a loving grandfather to all your grandchildren
and taking such pride in each of them."

NSW: "No winners" in police shooting case, officer tells inquest
By Kim Arlington
SYDNEY, Aug 9 AAP - A policeman who tried to save a man shot by a police colleague
broke down today as he told a Sydney inquest "there was no winner" in the tragic case.
Senior Constable John Mulhearn was the first officer on the scene after Acting Inspector
Rafic Ajaka shot 31-year-old Awale Mohammed on January 14 last year.
Glebe Coroners Court has been told that on January 13, Mr Mohammed was assessed by
a mental health nurse as being at low risk of harming himself and others.
The following afternoon, the Somalian immigrant attacked passer-by Matthew Fitzhenry
on Belmore Road, in the middle of Riverwood's busy shopping centre.
Insp Ajaka came across the pair moments before Mr Mohammed began repeatedly stabbing
22-year-old Mr Fitzhenry, who survived the attack.
Ignoring repeated demands to drop the knife, Mr Mohammed stabbed himself in the chest
and was shot when he advanced towards Insp Ajaka, the inquest has been told.
Sen Const Mulhearn arrived minutes later and administered first aid to Mr Mohammed,
who died from self-inflicted stab wounds and a gunshot wound to the chest.
Shedding tears in the witness box, Sen Const Mulhearn told Mr Mohammed's family that
every effort had been made to save his life.
"We all did our best and we could do no more," Sen Const Mulhearn told family members,
including Mr Mohammed's mother, sitting in the public gallery.
"In this particular case there was no winner."
Sen Const Mulhearn said Insp Ajaka seemed to be in shock after the shooting.
"I knew he wasn't hurt physically but ... he was traumatised and he was extremely concerned
about both parties, Matthew and Mr Mohammed."
Earlier, NSW Deputy Coroner Jacqueline Milledge had warned a cousin of Mr Mohammed
against intimidating witnesses while he sat in the public gallery.
A witness to the attack, Alison Rivett, told the court that while another witness had
been giving evidence, the man had stared at her and said, "She's making it up".
"It made me think if I got up here and said something he didn't like ... I might not
want to speak the whole truth," Ms Rivett said.
Ms Milledge told the man she would not tolerate intimidatory behaviour in the courtroom
and told the man to stay away from witnesses.
The inquest heard from several witnesses to the attack, all of whom said they feared
Mr Mohammed would stab Insp Ajaka.
Mr Mohammed kept moving towards the officer, even after the first shot was fired, the
court was told.
Tania Killen told the inquest Mr Mohammed was moving towards the police officer in
"a threatening way".
"He was lunging at him with the knife," Ms Killen said.
Another witness, Shirley Kelly, gave evidence that Mr Mohammed was continually moving
towards the police officer with his knife raised.
"I feel that if the police officer hadn't shot (him), he could have been stabbed," she said.
Sefic Pinjic, who was having lunch with his teenage son on Belmore Road when he saw
the incident, said Insp Ajaka had no choice but to shoot as the man came at him.
He said Mr Mohammed was holding his knife "ready to kill someone" and other people
could have been stabbed if the officer had not been on the scene.
"He didn't have a choice ... he didn't have time to think about it," Mr Pinjic told
the inquest, which continues tomorrow.

Study: Parents Likely to Embrace Predictive Genetic Testing for Their Children if Offered.
WASHINGTON, April 18, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Parents offered genetic testing to predict their risks of common, adult-onset health conditions say they would also test their children. That is the finding of a new national study published in the May issue of Pediatrics (published online April 18). The study authors note these and other findings should put pediatricians on alert that parents may chose predictive genetic tests for themselves and for their children, and seek guidance from doctors about what to do with the information.
Personal genetic tests are available directly to consumers at drug stores and over the Internet. They are controversial, and generally marketed to adults for their own use. However, it might be only a matter of time before parents become the focus of advertising campaigns targeting their children for testing, says Kenneth P. Tercyak, Ph.D., associate professor of oncology and pediatrics at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, a part of Georgetown University Medical Center.
"The findings of our study should remind clinicians and policy-makers to consider children when regulating genetic tests," says Tercyak, the study's lead author. "These tests usually don't offer a clean bill of health and can be hard to interpret even in the best scenario. They identify incremental risks for many common diseases. Most people carry some risk based on a combination of their family history, genetics, and lifestyle. A child's unexpected test results could trigger negative reactions among parents and children, and lead to conversations at the pediatrician's office that providers aren't prepared to have."
The study, part of a larger effort by the National Human Genome Research Institute at the National Institutes of Health to assess the public's use of genetic tests, involved 219 parents who had been offered genetic testing for susceptibility to eight common, adult-onset health conditions (including colon, skin and lung cancer; heart disease; high cholesterol; and type 2 diabetes). The study mirrored health care consumer experiences and included online interactions with the researchers. Parents in the study were asked about their beliefs of the risks and benefits of predictive genetic testing for their child, as well as their interest in having their child tested if the test were made available. (No children were tested in this study).
Tercyak says the group of parents that were most interested in the test for themselves were interested in having their child tested too. In fact, parents made little distinction between the pros and cons of testing for themselves and for their children -- generally favoring the information, and believing it could lead to improved health maintenance, disease prevention, and other personal benefits during childhood and later on in the child's life.
Several professional organizations advise against predictive genetic testing in childhood for adult-onset conditions when the information has not been shown to reduce disease or death through interventions initiated early in life. But Tercyak says, "Genetic testing for common disease risk could usher in a new era of personalized medicine. Someday, this type of information could help jump start conversations about lifestyle risks, and ways pediatricians can help parents and children reduce risk through healthier eating and exercise habits and avoiding tobacco and other substances. We still need to learn more about how to support families regarding choices on genetic tests and in adopting lifestyle changes, and what role high quality genetic information could play in those conversations."
Kirsten B. Hawkins, M.D., M.P.H., an assistant professor of pediatrics at Georgetown University Medical Center and chief of the section of adolescent medicine at Georgetown University Hospital, agrees. "I counsel teens who are overweight and who have other concerns about their health because of certain diseases that run in the family." Hawkins says educating families about risks for disease is an essential part of prevention and wellness. "Someday," she notes, "the results of pediatric genetic tests could better inform these conversations. For now, encouraging parents and their children to avoid smoking, consume a well-balanced diet, and stay active are good advice for remaining healthy." (Hawkins was not involved in the study).
The authors report no personal financial interests related to the study. The work was supported by the National Institutes of Health.

The chaebol conundrum; South Korea's industrial giants.
Korea Inc is back and booming. So it's time to stop coddling the all-conquering chaebol
PERHAPS it is the result of being sandwiched between the imperial dynasties of China and Japan. It may have something to do with having a nuclear-armed hermit to the north. Whatever the reason, South Koreans nurture a deep sense of insecurity. That makes them good capitalists. So good, in fact, that if any rich country can claim to have done well in the recent global crisis, it is theirs. Last year, despite its dependence on exports and the collapse of world trade, South Korea's economy grew faster than any other in the OECD.
South Korea's remarkable resilience is partly down to clever economic management. The government provided lashings of stimulus. But it was not just domestic demand that kept the economy going. The export prowess of those peculiar corporate beasts, called the chaebol (
), was also responsible.
In the years after the Asian financial crisis of 1997-98, these unwieldy conglomerates, known disparagingly as Korea Inc, were regarded as villains, because of their habits of crony capitalism. Their shabby corporate governance and their dominance of the economy were widely criticised. Since then, bosses have been jailed, transparency increased and corporate governance improved.
Since the global economic crisis they have been regarded as saviours in South Korea. Though the country's exports slid, its biggest companies, such as Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motors, gobbled up market share from competitors in Japan, Europe and America. Granted, they benefited from a cheap won. But they also made a fine job of selling things like electronics, chips and ships in fast-growing emerging markets to make up for some of the sales lost in the West. Samsung's profits this year are forecast at a record $10 billion, and its sales at $130 billion, which would confirm its lead over Hewlett-Packard as the world's biggest technology company by revenue.
BlackBerry and Apple crumble
The national paranoia has served them well. Though Samsung, for example, is a world leader in televisions and flash memory chips, it continues relentlessly to measure itself against its competitors. Having rebuilt their balance-sheets over the past decade, the chaebol have invested enough in technology, design and branding to remain far ahead of low-cost competitors in China and elsewhere. What's more, they artfully avoided Japan's trap of fetishising expensive, state-of-the-art technology for its own sake.
So the chaebol are certainly due an apology from those, including this newspaper, who thought they would be too unwieldy for modern business. But from South Korea's point of view, they are a narrow base on which to build a country's economic future. First, they face competition in new forms for which their hierarchical management structures and complicated, dynastic ownership are ill suited. Apple's iPhone and the ubiquitous BlackBerry crept up on Samsung Electronics, exposing its shortcoming in smart-phones.
Second, the size and strength of the chaebol risk stifling entrepreneurialism elsewhere. By and large, their local suppliers are the only medium-sized South Korean companies to have thrived in recent years. Some young businesses such as internet search and gaming have done well, but these are in fields where the chaebol cannot yet be bothered to tread. If they ever do, they may smother rather than nurture independent talent.
President Lee Myung-bak still seems to be promoting the chaebol. He has just pardoned Lee Kun-hee, the boss of Samsung, who was convicted of tax evasion in 2008, enabling him to retake the reins of Samsung Electronics. The president has also successfully championed his chaebol chums in a contest to provide nuclear power to Abu Dhabi. And his government wants to relax holding-company laws that would make it easier for the conglomerates to own financial firms.
It is one thing to provide leadership. It is another to choose favourites and pick winners. If President Lee wants to promote anyone, it should be South Korea's underdogs--the small companies that risk getting squashed by the country's privileged monsters. The chaebol have proved themselves highly successful capitalists. Let them take care of themselves.
z WORLD REPORTSpies access USweapons data.
Computer spies have repeatedly breached the Pentagon's costliest weapons programme, the US$300 billion ($537 billion) Joint Strike Fighter project, the Wall Street Journal reported. The newspaper quoted Government officials familiar with the matter as saying the intruders were able to copy and siphon data related to design and electronics systems. The spies could not access the most sensitive material, which was kept on computers that were not connected to the Internet.
Kenyan mafia spark clash
Clashes between residents and members of an outlawed criminal gang erupted in central Kenya, killing 24 people, police said. The Mungiki gang is Kenya's version of the mafia and is involved in extortion and racketeering rings, kidnapping and murder. The clashes started when Mungiki members tried to force people out of the town of Karatina. Police arrested 37 people and recovered axes, machetes and other weapons.
Nuclear vessels on show
China plans to display its nuclear submarines this week in the first known public appearance of some its most potent warships. The vessels will appear at the international fleet review in Qingdao, deputy Navy commander Ding Yiping was quoted as saying by the official Xinhua News Agency. The People's Liberation Army, controlled by the Communist Party, has traditionally kept its best weaponry tightly under wraps, but there has been a growing openness in recent years.
California dreaming of cold
Coastal California sweltered for a second day in a summer-like heat wave. The National Weather Service reported temperatures reached 38C in downtown Los Angeles, breaking the previous record of 35C set for the date in 1958. San Francisco set a new mark at an unseasonable 34C.
G20 crowd-control backed
A senior officer has defended tactics used against protesters during the G20 summit in London this month in which a man died and several groups accused police of being heavy-handed. Ken Jones, president of the Association of Chief Police Officers, said the crowd-control methods used avoided more aggressive techniques used elsewhere. ``I can't find any other country that doesn't use water cannon, CS gas, rubber bullets.'' The Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating three cases of alleged police violence.

Water Deliveries On the Rise in California.(Originated from The Bakersfield Californian)
Mar. 15--Water deliveries are on the rise again.
The State Water Project has upped its delivery from 90 percent to 100 percent and the federal Central Valley Project deliveries to the Friant Water Users Authority has increased from 25 percent to 35 percent for Class II water. The announcements were made last week.
The federal Central Valley Project will deliver 100 percent of its Class I water to Friant users on the east side of the valley, 800,000 acre-feet, plus the 35 percent of Class II -- 490,000 acre-feet.
In a normal year, contractors get all their Class I water and some of their Class II water. There is no difference in the quality of the water. Class I simply refers to the water that is a firm entitlement, while Class II is the extra water available in wetter years.
The Friant Water Users serve 15,000 growers on the east side of the valley who farm 1 million acres from Madera to Arvin-Edison.
The State Water Project -- the major source of water for Kern County -- will provide 1.1 million acre-feet requested by the Kern County Water Agency.
The Central Valley Project -- the second-biggest source -- will provide 1.3 million acre-feet to Friant users, most of whom are in Kern County.
Kern's third big source of water is the Kern River and it is at 100 percent of normal, according to snow surveys. The Kern will send about another 675,000 acre-feet of water down the canyon, according to Steve Lafond, hydrographic supervisor for the city water department.
And the Central Valley Project projections do not take into account the most recent storm Tuesday, added Randy McFarland, the public information consultant for Friant Water Users Authority.
"This appears to be an unprecedented water year," McFarland said. "It was totally dry in October and November and then turned around and had an above-average supply. It's turning out to be a great year."
